2-3.78
Brahman and Subrahman were in these worlds, in this creation. Then Subrahman departed upwards. That Āditya is Brahman, and speech is Subrahman. The gods enclosed Brahman here with the sacrifice, inside the altar-ground (antarvedi). Thus even now Brahman is enclosed with the sacrifice inside the altar-ground. On this they say: 'Since other priestly functions are performed inside the altar-ground, why does the Subrahmaṇyā priest perform [his duty] outside the altar-ground?' He should say: 'The rubbish-heap (utkara) is the self of the altar-ground, and the Subrahmaṇyā formula is visibly Brahman; when he stands on the rubbish-heap and then invokes the Subrahmaṇyā, thereby it becomes done by him inside the altar-ground.' He says three times: 'Subrahmaṇyom, Subrahmaṇyom, Subrahmaṇyom!' Speech is Subrahmaṇyā; thus he undertakes this speech in the beginning. Moreover, Brahman is speech, and the syllable Om is its essence; he satisfies this speech with the essence. Regarding this, some invoke: 'Om Subrahmaṇyā—'"
