He should say: 'In this very formula is all this which is verse, sāman, and sacrificial formula; thereby his Subrahmaṇyā comes to have a chant and a recitation.' On this they say: 'What is the Subrahmaṇyā formula like? Is it like a verse, or like a sāman, or like a sacrificial formula?' He should say: 'It is neither verse, nor sacrificial formula, nor sāman; it is like everything, for Brahman is like everything.' And the Subrahmaṇyā that he invokes when the King [Soma] has been purchased, and the Subrahmaṇyā that he invokes standing on the rubbish-heap while the priestly gifts are being led forth, are this very same [formula]. Moreover, [he does this] so that the beginning may be the conclusion; moreover, [he thinks]: 'Indra has arrived; let us not deny him.' This is indeed the five-calved, five-footed cow; when they say, 'cattle are fivefold,' that is this. Now some invoke it according to the deity: wholly addressed to Agni at the Agniṣṭut rite, addressed to Indra at the Indrastoma, addressed to the All-Gods at the Vaiśvadeva, and unexpressed at the unexpressed rite. But that is by no means so, for there is no disorder in Brahman. One should invoke it just as it has come down; one should invoke it just as it has come down.
