2-3.99
The heavenly world is indeed like a choice boon, for the success of the heavenly world itself.
One may give this [boon], while another gives seventeen gold ornaments at each and every chant.
The gods and the asuras contended in the sacrifice.
Whatever the gods did in the sacrifice, that very thing the asuras copied.
The gods said: "Whatever indeed we do in the sacrifice, that our [rival] asuras copy.
Come, let us sacrifice with the gold soma."
Now at that time, gold belonged only to the gods, not to the asuras.
For the gold of the asuras had been appropriated by the gods.
They sacrificed with the gold soma.
At each and every chant, they gave seventeen gold ornaments.
The asuras could not keep pace with that of theirs.
They said: "Alas, the gods have performed a hopeless rite!"
That indeed is the hopelessness of the hopeless.
Then indeed the gods flourished and the asuras were defeated.
He flourishes himself, and his hateful rival is defeated, who knows thus.
For him, the Śukra and Sandra [sāmans] are the assigned chants for the two Pavamānas.
For this sacrifice belongs to the sun and the moon.
They thus make the stoma flourish with its proper form.
