2-7.213

And of all of them there are three hundred and sixty stotra verses; so many are the nights of the year; night by night they obtain the year. As to this they say: 'Only the pṛṣṭhas should be undertaken; from pṛṣṭha to pṛṣṭha indeed one should proceed, for the pṛṣṭhas are the seasons.' The first should have the Rathantara sāman, then the Bṛhat sāman, then the Vairūpa sāman, then the Vairāja sāman, then the Śakvarī sāman, and the last should have the Revatī sāman. But they also say: 'By the consecrations and the upasads the pṛṣṭhas would be cut off from the soma pressing. If they should do this, they undertake the pṛṣṭhas as if far apart. Indeed, [only] a pṛṣṭha is capable of carrying a pṛṣṭha. An addition to the Bṛhat and Rathantara are these other sāmans; the Bṛhat and Rathantara are indeed for the continuity of the interrupted sacrifice. Therefore they should consist of the Bṛhat and Rathantara only.' The first should have the Rathantara sāman, then the Bṛhat sāman, then the Rathantara sāman, then the Bṛhat sāman, then the Rathantara sāman, and the last should have the Bṛhat sāman. Among them, those sāmans which have the seasons as their finales they arrange as heavenly, for the attainment of the heavenly world and for the prosperity of the forms of day and night.
