2-7.241

Now these three-day rites: By the three-day rite, the gods prospered in these worlds; by the three-day rite, they went to the heavenly world. Speech, verily, is the three-day rite. According to the form of speech, the ājya [stotras] and the days are divided. Speech has one syllable; a syllable has three sounds. They are divided according to the form of the syllable. There are three Gandharvas. Their share is this: Agni's is the earth, Vāyu's is the intermediate region, and that yonder—just as that yonder is the sky, so it is—Āditya's is the sky. Regarding this, it is recited: 'Three make the seed in the creatures; three are the noble offspring with light at their head; three caldrons attend the dawn; the Vasiṣṭhas know all that in order.' When it says, 'Three make the seed in the creatures,' Agni makes seed on the earth, Vāyu in the intermediate region, Āditya in heaven. 'Three are the noble offspring with light at their head':

Just so great is the three-day rite.
