and that with the tri-finale. These three sāmans are to be performed in the thousand-[cow] three-night rite, taken out as the choice portion of the god Īśāna. He who knows thus takes out a choice portion, and becomes worthy of a choice portion. Therefore these sāmans are to be performed in the thousand-[cow] three-night rite, the sāmans of the god Īśāna, the unbending; [lest] he be capable of injuring the cattle of the sacrificer. But his thousand would be given as though devoid of essence. They are to be performed for the preservation of the thousand. When Prajāpati gave the thousand to the gods, they ate it without watching. Being eaten, it vanished from the gods. They addressed it. It said: 'I fear destruction.' 'No,' they said, 'we shall eat you in such a way that being eaten and drunk by us, you will not be destroyed.' [It said:] 'Establish the cosmic order (ṛta) for me!' For it they established the cosmic order with the ṛt-finale [sāman]; with the ī-finale they caused [the gods] to eat it; and with the tri-finale they propagated it and made imperishability for it. For him who knows thus, his thousand, while being eaten, is not destroyed.
