2-7.256

Day after day there are the Sauparṇa sāmans, belonging to heaven, for the attainment of the heavenly world. / Regarding this they say: 'These sāmans are rapid; they might cut down the sacrificer before his full span of life. / Only two are to be performed, just for flight.' / They also say: 'They effect this for him; / only one is to be performed, just for attainment.' / Why then should they cut him down? All of them should be performed. / The gods went upwards to the heavenly world by means of the three-day rite. / Not being firmly held, it was being torn apart for them. / With the Gāyatrapārśva they propped it up; with the Saṃtanin they held it together; with the Saṃkṛti they put it in order; with the Triṣandhi they joined it; with the Śrāyantīya they made it adhere; with the Ariṣṭa they brought it to harmlessness. / That these sāmans are performed is for propping up the three-day rite, for holding together the three-day rite, for putting in order the three-day rite, for joining the three-day rite, for making the three-day rite adhere, for the harmlessness of the three-day rite. / The six-day rite has the Kakubh, the Svāra has the Uṣṇih; / they interweave the three-day rite right in the middle, so that it does not collapse.
