Eighty-seven are the verses to be chanted of the Mahāvrata, thirteen are the parimāds. / That is a hundred. / Man has a life of a hundred years, a hundred faculties, a hundred vital powers; [it is] for the attainment of that very faculty and vital power. / Then they utter these voices: / the minor parimāds, the karkarī-lute, the gourd-lute, the bent lute, the monkey-headed lute, the reed-pipe, the apāghātalīkā, the vīṇā, the tortoise-lute, the earth-drum struck with a bull's hide, and the hundred-stringed vāṇa-harp. / Drums stretched in the mid-air sound. / Women with water-jars on their heads walk around. / They utter these voices for the attainment of all voice, of the whole voice, thinking: 'May we obtain the whole voice.' / When the earth-drum struck with a bull's hide sounds, the bull is the highest voice; [it is] for the attainment of the highest voice. / Drums stretched in the mid-air sound; whatever voice is in the mid-air, that very voice they attain thereby. / Women with water-jars on their heads walk around; this is the visible form of the sky, namely, the head; whatever voice is in yonder [sky], that very voice they attain thereby. / They strike the hundred-stringed vāṇa-harp; man has a life of a hundred years, a hundred faculties, a hundred vital powers; [it is] for the attainment of that very faculty and vital power.
