2-8.414

On this they say: "It should be undertaken only at the end of the year." / Badly formed indeed is the vrata known from where it arises. / It is twenty-five-fold. / The year consists of twenty-four half-months; food is the twenty-fifth; it is food as the twenty-fifth that is placed on it. / Twenty-five-fold indeed is man. / "This is the stotra of man," they say. Ten indeed are the fingers of man on the hands, ten on the feet, four are the main limbs, the self is the twenty-fifth. Six are these joints, six these, six these, six these, the self is the twenty-fifth. Twelve are these ribs, twelve these, the self itself is the twenty-fifth. / It is man that they prepare with this; man that they generate. / On this they say: "This whole day should be undertaken as twenty-five-fold. / They should undertake the head as twenty-five-fold, the other wing as twenty-five-fold, the other as twenty-five-fold, the tail as twenty-five-fold, the self as twenty-five-fold. Thus is the attainment of the vrata: 'Limb by limb let us attain the vrata.'" / Concerning this, Ṛjiśvan Vātavāta used to say: "Being just one stotra, dividing it into five parts, they should praise. With five [verses] they should praise the head, with five the other wing, with five the other, with five the tail, with five the self. / Thus it is just one twenty-five-fold [stotra] and does not exceed. / Thus is the attainment of the vrata."
