2-8.423

'There is indeed further beyond'—that is the Ekaviṃśa. 'Wearied, one may reach it'—that is the Triṇava. 'Let it sit down'—that is the Trayastriṃśa. Then just as one would lodge for one or two nights, such are the Chandomas. These two, the Bṛhat and the Rathantara, are the royal power (kṣatra) among the sāmans; and a kṣatriya is a leader across a wilderness. So when one goes through a wilderness with a royal power, whatever robber recognizes him there, whatever small cake or honey he has, with that he appears before him. But the others, fanged beasts and waylayers, turn away into the bush and thickets. Just as one would cross a wilderness without fear together with a kṣatriya, even so do they cross over by means of the Bṛhat and the Rathantara. And further, this indeed is the path of the gods, namely the Pṛṣṭhya-ṣaḍaha. The gods, having gone to this heavenly world by this path of the gods, feared the following of humans. They said: 'Consider this, so that humans may not follow us!' They drove back those sacrifice-confusing demons. When a consecrated person dies, when he is obstructed, it is these [demons] that do that. The Bṛhat and the Rathantara lead [the sacrificers] across. They slay those [demons] having leaders, and they slay those without leaders who discard the Bṛhat and the Rathantara. Therefore the Bṛhat and the Rathantara are not to be discarded.
