They go, holding onto the very feet of the year. Unharmed, in well-being, they reach the conclusion. 'Now, when I said to you: "Do not cause the unfallen of the sacrifice to fall", it was the Vāmadevya that I spoke of to you. For this is the unfallen of the sacrifice, namely the Vāmadevya; for the Vāmadevya is breath, [and we say]: "Lest we be cut off from breath." And when I said to you: "Take up that which belongs to tomorrow in the sacrifice", it was the Gaurīvita that I spoke of to you. For this is that which belongs to tomorrow in the sacrifice, namely the Gaurīvita; offspring is that which belongs to tomorrow, cattle is that which belongs to tomorrow, the heavenly world is that which belongs to tomorrow. Just as a guide would lead a company, saying: "Yonder is easy of path, by that we will go; yonder is a good crossing, by that we will cross; yonder is good dwelling, there we will dwell", so these two terminal strophes of the Gaurīvita go as seers of the destination. Moreover, just as the Soma-herald proclaims the Soma, so these two terminal strophes of the Gaurīvita proclaim the Soma to the gods. He on whose day the Gaurīvita takes place dwells on that night as one whose Soma is proclaimed. And the gods look at him, saying: "Run, tomorrow he will sacrifice!" So when they do not perform the Gaurīvita on a one-day rite, [it is] lest we cause the gods to be disappointed.'
