2-8.435
That Atirātra, without the Ṣoḍaśin, amounts to twenty-one twenty-one-verse [stomas] and one stotriya verse. There, that which is twenty-one twenty-one-verse [stomas] is Āditya. Sovereignty and lordship over that world belong to Āditya. They go to sovereignty and lordship over that world who know this. If they were to perform the Ṣoḍaśin here, it would amount to twenty-two twenty-one-verse [stomas] and one stotriya verse; he would disrupt the concordance. And it also amounts to forty-nine threefold [stomas] and one stotriya verse. There, that which is forty-nine threefold [stomas] is Agni. Sovereignty and lordship over this world belong to Agni. He goes to sovereignty and lordship over this world who knows this. If they were to perform the Ṣoḍaśin here, it would amount to fifty-one threefold [stomas] and four stotriya verses; they would disrupt the concordance. He would not attain the one concordance nor the other. That this Vaiśvānara introductory Atirātra is performed is the crossing-place of the gods. In it, this stake is made, which is the Ṣoḍaśin. The Ṣoḍaśin is of the Virāj meter, established in each Virāj. Wherever he considers this to attain the Virāj, right there should praise be offered with it.
