Now the Asuras named Paṇis were the cowherds of the gods.
They departed with them [the cows].
Having confined them in the Rasā, they enclosed them with Vala.
The gods said to the vulture (Aliklava): 'O Suparṇa, seek out these cows of ours.'
[He said:] 'Yes.'
He flew after them.
He found them enclosed within the Rasā by Vala.
To him who had arrived, they placed before him ghee, milk, curds, and clotted curd (āmikṣā).
He became well satisfied.
They said to him: 'O Suparṇa, this alone will be your tribute, this your food; do not report [us].'
He flew back.
They said to him: 'O Suparṇa, did you find the cows?'
'What report could there be of the cows?' he said.
'This is the very report of the cows!' said Indra, squeezing his throat: 'Indeed, you speak with your mouth full of the cows!'
He vomited up a drop of curd or clotted curd.
It became that which grows in spring as an earth-mushroom (bhūmikapaṭhu).
Then he cursed him: 'O wretched rogue, let your livelihood be base, you who, having found our cows, did not report them!'
Therefore, his livelihood is that which is the lowest in the rear half of a village.
