The gods prepared this Abhiplava.
With it, they sailed over towards them.
That they sailed over (abhyaplavanta), that is the nature of the Abhiplava.
With fire they burned Vala; with the thunderbolt (vajra) they shattered [him].
That light (Jyotis) which is in front, that is Agni; then the fifteen-fold Bahiṣpavamāna of Gauḥ, that is the thunderbolt.
By means of Āyus they united them [the cows] to themselves.
In that they united them by Āyus (āyuṣaivāyuvata), that is the nature of Āyus.
With this very light (Jyotis) they encompassed them on both sides.
These four in the middle become Ukthyas.
Ukthas, truly, are cattle.
Their stotriya verses are a thousand.
Brahman, indeed, is the Jyotis-Agniṣṭoma.
Enclosing them on both sides with this very brahman, the light, they brought them out.
Those who, knowing thus, perform the Abhiplava, rise having indeed won a thousand [cows].
As to this, they say: 'Since in the middle of this four-day period Gauḥ and Āyus are intertwined as Gauḥ, Āyus, Gauḥ, Āyus, then why are the two lights (Jyotis) placed at the two ends?'
'For pairing, for procreation,' he should say.
Whoever knows this procreates through a pair.
