Now the Śākala sāman: Śakala saw the fifth day as connected with the Rathantara in form; therefore it is performed on the Rathantara day. Śakala, desiring food, performed austerities. He saw this sāman. With it he sang praise. Then indeed he obtained food. This [sāman] has [the quality] that as one gives, so it is. It has a hiṃkāra; the hiṃkāra is food. With "hum" food is given. This sāman is the obtaining of food. He obtains food and becomes an eater of food, the best among his own people, who knows this. Moreover, whatever cruel act, as it were, is done on this day prior to the Śakvarī verses, they pacify it with this hiṃkāra. And because Śakala saw it, therefore it is called the Śākala.
