26.159
Now the three Vaidanvata [sāmans]. Śaryāta Mānava sacrificed on the eastern plain. The ṛṣis officiated for him. There both gods and men drank Soma together. There Soma was drunk completely by both gods and men. At that [sacrifice] Cyavana Bhārgava drew a soma cup for the two Aśvins. Indra pushed back his cup: "What unknown cup is this that is circulating?" Vidanvant Bhārgava retorted to him: "Who is fit to question that cup which we offer?"
26.159.p1
Those gods grew angry; the ṛṣis grew angry.
26.159.p2
Those ninety-nine Maruts stood with spears in hand: "Now we shall overthrow this, and now this all
26.159.p3
will be crushed."
26.159.p4
Then the ṛṣis invoked the Asuric Mada [Intoxication].
26.159.p5
He, cleaving asunder, placed his head against the mid-space. That was a great conflict.
26.159.p6
Agni said to Indra: "Let your anger depart; these are better than we."
26.159.p7
"If indeed you anger them, nothing at all will remain here,
26.159.p8
for we are born from them."
26.160
Agni dispelled his anger.
Indra, his anger gone, ran forth together with the gods.
Their sacrifice became without Indra and without gods.
They desired, "May our sacrifice have Indra, may it have gods!"
Vidanvat Bhārgava saw these sāmans.
With them he praised.
With them he called Indra.
With them he dispelled his anger.
Then indeed Indra turned back toward their sacrifice.
Then he became one who does not depart from them.
Then their sacrifice came to have Indra and to have gods.
These sāmans are indeed possessed of Indra and possessed of gods.
The sacrifice of one who knows thus comes to have Indra and to have gods; Indra turns toward his sacrifice; Indra does not depart from his sacrifice.
Cattle indeed are "those who find" (vidanvantaḥ); these verses contain "finding" (vidanvatīḥ).
Unto them they release this bull of Vidanvat, for pairing, for procreation.
He is procreated through a pair, who knows thus.
And because Vidanvat Bhārgava saw them, therefore they are called "Vaidanvatas."
26.161
Now, the Asuric intoxication (mada) became afraid.
He said: "Do not call me forth in vain; place me apart!"
They said: "Thinking 'we will drink,' let us fetch liquor (surā) from the food of Varuṇa.
In it no one was afflicted, [thinking] 'I shall perish.'
There, O intoxication, go!"
That Asuric intoxication was placed in the liquor.
"He is pressed, who [is the lord] of riches, who of wealth"—
in this way 'rūti' is the form of the Revatīs.
26.161.p1
Upon them [is sung] the Dīrgha, one of the Bṛhat [sāmans].
26.161.p2
By this indeed this day is made connected with the Bṛhat.
26.161.p3
The gods, desirous of heaven, practiced austerity.
26.161.p4
They saw this sāman.
26.161.p5
With it they praised.
26.161.p6
Then, having become long (dīrgha) indeed, it carried them to the heavenly world.
26.162
Having gone to the heavenly world, they said: "Having become long indeed, this sāman has conveyed us to the heavenly world!"
That is the longness of the Dīrgha.
This is a sāman that leads to heaven.
He attains the heavenly world, who knows thus.
"For your intoxication, O friends"—
thus [verses] containing the word "intoxication" (madvat) are [used].
Thereby, successively, they place sap and exhilaration into the third pressing.
"Sing toward him as he purifies himself,
like an infant [feeding him] with sacrificial offerings, pleasing him with eulogies"—
thus they approach the very form of cattle.
An infant indeed belongs to cattle.
"Gathered like a calf with its mothers, the drop, being urged on, is anointed"—
thus [verses] containing cows and cattle are [used], for the securing of cattle,
for this day is cattle.
"The intoxication favoring the gods, adorned by prayers"—
thus [verses] containing the word "around" (parivat) are [used], which is the form of the end,
for this day is the end.
26.162.p1
Then, upon them, the Kārṇaśravasa [is sung].
Indra, having hurled the thunderbolt at Vṛtra, thinking "I have not laid [him] low," became dismayed.
His ears closed up.
With them he could not hear.
He desired, "May I be not deaf; may I hear with my ears!"
He saw this sāman.
With it he praised. Thereupon he indeed became non-deaf; he heard with his two ears. He said, 'I have heard indeed with my two ears.' That is the kārṇaśravasa-nature of the Kārṇaśravasa [sāman]. He becomes non-deaf, he hears with his two ears, who knows thus. They also call it the Gauloma. Golomā Āṅgirasa, desiring cattle, performed austerity. He saw this sāman. With it he praised. He went toward this iḷā. The iḷā is cattle; thereupon he indeed obtained cattle. This is a cattle-granting sāman. He obtains cattle, he becomes rich in cattle, who knows thus. And because Golomā Āṅgirasa saw it, therefore it is named Gauloma. 'The Soma drops, flowing clear, most path-finding for us, friendly, sounded, spotless'—in this [verse] is the form of the Revatīs. On them is the Gaurīvīta, whose Brāhmaṇa has been stated.
