Then, upon them, the Kārṇaśravasa [is sung].
Indra, having hurled the thunderbolt at Vṛtra, thinking "I have not laid [him] low," became dismayed.
His ears closed up.
With them he could not hear.
He desired, "May I be not deaf; may I hear with my ears!"
He saw this sāman.
With it he praised. Thereupon he indeed became non-deaf; he heard with his two ears. He said, 'I have heard indeed with my two ears.' That is the kārṇaśravasa-nature of the Kārṇaśravasa [sāman]. He becomes non-deaf, he hears with his two ears, who knows thus. They also call it the Gauloma. Golomā Āṅgirasa, desiring cattle, performed austerity. He saw this sāman. With it he praised. He went toward this iḷā. The iḷā is cattle; thereupon he indeed obtained cattle. This is a cattle-granting sāman. He obtains cattle, he becomes rich in cattle, who knows thus. And because Golomā Āṅgirasa saw it, therefore it is named Gauloma. 'The Soma drops, flowing clear, most path-finding for us, friendly, sounded, spotless'—in this [verse] is the form of the Revatīs. On them is the Gaurīvīta, whose Brāhmaṇa has been stated.
