34.p3

They thereby make cattle the counterpart of cattle.

34.p4

Here they do not make a visible counterpart.

34.206

Therefore cattle give birth to various forms: both a white [cow] gives birth to a black [calf], and a black gives birth to a white; both a red gives birth to a speckled, and a speckled to a red. It consists of nine verses. Nine indeed are the breaths in man. They proceed prospering with the breaths, firmly established in the breaths. The second consists of nine verses; the third consists of nine verses. In regular order they proceed prospering with the breaths. It consists of five verses; the paṅkti indeed has five feet; cattle are fivefold; cattle are the chandomas, for the acquisition of cattle. As to this they say: "The six-day pṛṣṭhya has seasons, the chandomas are without seasons; these that are the chandomas are established as though seasonless." Because these [hymns] consist of five verses and six verses, the chandomas are thereby made to possess seasons. There is a finale (paryāsa) for the maintenance of creatures, for the support of cattle. The stoma is forty-four-fold. The triṣṭubh indeed has forty-four syllables; the triṣṭubh is faculty and vital power; they proceed firmly established in faculty and vital power.

34.206.p1

"Agni your god, in unison with the fires,"

34.206.p2

thus the ājya [shastra] belongs to Agni, connected with the rathantara;

34.206.p3

for this day is connected with the rathantara.

34.206.p4

"Make the best sacrificer the messenger at the sacrifice;"

34.207

"who is constant among mortals, conforming to the cosmic order, hot-flowing, ghee-fed, the purifier"—this indeed is Agni's dear abode, namely ghee; they prosper him with his dear abode. "Snorting like a horse longing for grass"—[it contains the word] "horse", precisely to repel the rival. "When he stepped out of the great enclosure"—for this day, which is the forty-four-fold, is great. "Then the wind blows after his flame; black indeed is your path"—when the wind blows upon Agni, then he burns greatly; that radiance is indeed the form of spiritual luster. "Of you, the newly-born bull, rising up"—thus they approach the triṣṭubh form; for this day belongs to the triṣṭubh. "O Agni, the unaging [flames] move, being kindled; you go toward heaven, the ruddy smoke; as a messenger, O Agni, you go to the gods"—for the attainment of the heavenly world.

34.207.p1

"When today the sun has risen,"
thus [the shastra] belongs to Mitra and Varuṇa.
"When" (yad) is the form of the rathantara;
this day is connected with the rathantara.
"Blameless are Mitra and Aryaman,"
"Savitṛ and Bhaga impel,"
"May that dwelling be of good heroes, onward now in the journey, O bounteous ones,"
"Who carry us across narrowness,"
so saying, [he recites] passing beyond [some verses].
"And Aditi, sovereign rulers, who over unassailable observance,"
"rule as great kings,"
for this day, which is the forty-four-fold, is great.
"We strengthen that Indra,"
thus it belongs to Indra.
"To slay the great Vṛtra,"

34.207.p2

thus it contains [a word for] slaying.
This is the sacrificer's own stotra, namely that of the Brahman priest.
