38.222
Now the Mādila [sāman] with the word-finale, based on the Rathantara. / Therefore it is performed on a Rathantara day. / The gods desired, 'May our Soma be rich in intoxicating power, may we rejoice in the intoxication of Soma.' / They saw this sāman. / With it they praised. / Thereupon their Soma became rich in intoxicating power; they rejoiced in the intoxication of Soma. / That is the mādilatva of the Mādila [sāman]. / Sap, indeed, is intoxication. / With sap, indeed, they then became fat. / Soma becomes rich in sap, rich in intoxicating power, for him who knows thus. / Moreover, their Chandomas would be, as it were, unobtained, if they were to perform this here. / Drained, as it were, are these Chandomas, having the third pressing as their seat. / For the third pressing is drained, as it were. / That the Mādila is here, by that they place sap into the Chandomas; they swell them by this.
38.222.p1
Now the Surūpa [sāman], for the prosperity of form itself.
38.222.p2
The Āṅgirases, performing austerity, were deprived of form and luster.
38.222.p3
They desired, 'May we be united with form and luster.'
38.222.p4
They saw this sāman.
38.222.p5
With it they praised.
38.222.p6
Thereupon, indeed, they were united with form and luster.
38.222.p7
They said, 'We have become well-formed (surūpāḥ).'
38.222.p8
That is the surūpatva of the Surūpa [sāman].
38.222.p9
He who knows thus is united with form and luster.
38.222.p10
Surūpa Āṅgirasa, desiring cattle, performed austerity.
38.222.p11
He saw this sāman.
38.222.p12
With it he praised.
38.222.p13
He approached this iḷā.
38.222.p14
Cattle, indeed, are iḷā.
38.222.p15
Thereupon, indeed, he obtained cattle.
38.223
That is a sāman pertaining to cattle. / He who knows thus obtains cattle, he becomes rich in cattle. / And because Surūpa Āṅgirasa saw it, therefore it is called the Surūpa. / Prajāpati created cattle. / When they had been created, their forms were not distinguished. / He saw these Surūpa sāmans. / With them he placed forms into them. / That is the surūpatva of the Surūpas. / He who knows thus obtains cattle possessing form. / The Chandomas indeed have the Arka-sāmans, having the form of the Surūpa. / Praised with Chandomas that have sāman, that have form, is he who knows thus. / The meter is then struck again. / Wherever, indeed, the gods found the sap of the meters, that they struck again, / that they beat upon again. / Drained, as it were, are these Chandomas, having the third pressing as their seat. / For the third pressing is drained, as it were. / That the meter is struck again, by that they place sap into the meters; / this is the following along of the sap itself.
38.224
Now the Kākṣīvata [sāman]. / Kakṣīvant desired, 'May I be propagated abundantly with offspring and cattle, may I attain prosperity and kingship.' / He saw this sāman. / With it he praised. / Thereupon, indeed, he was propagated abundantly with offspring and cattle; he attained prosperity and kingship. / There were, indeed, a thousand descendants of Kakṣīvant. / With these sons, indeed, he attained prosperity and kingship. / He who knows thus reaches prosperity, attains kingship. / And it is unstruck by stobhas. / From the unstruck, indeed, offspring and cattle are born. / The Chandomas are cattle. / Therefore it is rich in form. / And because Kakṣīvant saw it, therefore it is called the Kākṣīvata.
38.224.p1
Now the Pramaṃhiṣṭhīya [sāman].
38.224.p2
When the seers were seated at a sacrificial session, their cattle ran low.
38.224.p3
They desired, 'May we obtain cattle.'
38.224.p4
They said, 'Come, let us ask Agni for cattle.'
38.224.p5
'He rules over cattle.'
38.224.p6
'He alone will give us cattle.'
38.225
They saw this sāman. With it they praised him: "Sing forth to the most bountiful, the righteous, the vast one of blazing brilliance; praised [sing] to Agni." He said to them: "With what desire are you [here]?" "Desiring cattle," they replied. To them, with this very sāman, he gave cattle. They said: "He has become most bountiful (pramaṃhiṣṭha) to us!" That is the essence of the Pramaṃhiṣṭhīya sāman. This is a cattle-winning sāman. He becomes most bountiful to him; he obtains cattle; he becomes rich in cattle who knows thus. Then the meter is repeated-and-divided. Wherever the gods found the essence of the meters, they repeated-and-divided it, they struck it again. For these Chandomas, having their abode at the third pressing, are as if drained. The third pressing is indeed as if drained. When the meter is repeated-and-divided, they thereby place the essence in the Chandomas; it is the finding of the essence for them.
38.226
Now the Svāśirām-arka: food indeed is the arka, [used] for obtaining food. The apsarases named Svāśiras were these very plants. They desired, 'May we become many, may we reproduce, may we pervade this world.' They saw this sāman. They praised with it. Thereupon they became many, they reproduced, they pervaded this world. Thus this whole world is covered with plants, even the mountains. That is a procreative sāman. He multiplies with offspring and cattle, he pervades this world, who knows thus. And because the apsarases Svāśiras saw [it], therefore it is named Svāśirām-arka. 'Toward glory, great renown'—because there is [the word] 'toward' (abhi), it is the characteristic form of the Rathantara; this day has the Rathantara nature. 'Quickening thoughts for the winning of cattle'—these [verses] have [words meaning] 'cattle' (gomatīḥ) and 'possessing animals' (paśumatīḥ), [used] for obtaining cattle; for the chandomas are cattle.
38.226.p1
On them [is chanted] the Aiṣira, composed by the ṛṣi Vāyu. Vāyu indeed is vigorous (iṣira). Whatever of the performers of a sacrificial session is lost during the session, that Vāyu heals for them. Vāyu is breath; through breath alone he cures that for them. By means of this, they perform an expiation, a healing. 'Breath, child of the great ones'—with this, they attain the very form of cattle; for a young one (śiśu) belongs to cattle.
38.226.p3
'Toward us, best winner of booty'—because there is [the word] 'toward' (abhi), it is the characteristic form of the Rathantara; this day has the Rathantara nature. 'Flowing with wealth, eagerly sought by hundreds, / O Soma, bearing thousands, mighty in glory, enduring widely'—what has 'hundreds' and has 'thousands', that is the characteristic form of the chandomas; for the chandomas are cattle. 'This sounding Soma has flowed into the sheep's [filter], dripping exhilaration'—thus they are possessed of exhilaration. Just in proper sequence they place sap and exhilaration in the third pressing. 'May we belong to this wealth of yours, rich one, rich one, much sought, / may we be closest, longing, in your favor, O uncheckable one'—these [verses] have [words meaning] 'cattle' (gomatīḥ) and 'possessing animals' (paśumatīḥ), [used] for obtaining cattle; for the chandomas are cattle. On them [is sung] the Gaurīvīta; its ritual explanation has been stated.
