4.p1

Now the Āśva.

4.p2

Prajāpati created creatures.

4.p3

He created them with the Āśva, having become a horse (aśva).

4.p4

Because he created them with the Āśva, having become a horse, that is the horse-nature (āśvatva) of the Āśva.

4.p5

That sāman is procreative.

4.14

It is performed on a procreative day.
With offspring and cattle he is born, who knows thus.
Therefore indeed this sāman should not be omitted from this day.
This sāman is indeed procreative.
This day is procreative.
In what is procreative, what is procreative is performed.
Regarding this they also say: '[It was the vision] of Aśva Sāmudri.'
Aśva Sāmudri desired: 'May I obtain cattle; may I reach the abundance of cattle.'
He saw this sāman.
He praised with it.
Then indeed he obtained cattle; he reached the abundance of cattle.
This is a cattle-granting sāman.
He obtains cattle, he reaches the abundance of cattle, who knows thus.
Because Aśva Sāmudri saw it, therefore it is called the Āśva.
Moreover, they say: 'By the Āśva the gods, having become horses, went to the heavenly world.'
That indeed is the horse-nature of the Āśva.
That indeed of it is heavenly.
He attains the heavenly world, who knows thus.

4.14.p1

Now the Somasāman.

4.14.p2

King Soma was, as it were, of equal feast with the other deities.

4.14.p3

He desired: 'May I be consecrated to the kingship of all the gods.'

4.14.p4

He saw this sāman.

4.14.p5

He praised with it.

4.14.p6

Then indeed he was consecrated to the kingship of all the gods.

4.14.p7

He is consecrated to pre-eminence among his own, who knows thus.

4.14.p8

He disappeared from them.

4.14.p9

They sought after him.

4.14.p10

He appeared to them in this form which is that of the moon.

4.14.p11

They came together unto him, saying: 'He has appeared, the seer!'

4.14.p12

Therefore when it shows itself, they come together, saying: 'He has appeared, the seer!'

4.14.p13

Him they anointed here.

4.14.p14

He became this.

4.14.p15

This is the sāman of glory and consecration.

4.14.p16

He attains glory, he goes to kingship, who knows thus.

4.14.p17

Because King Soma saw it, therefore it is called the Somasāman.

4.14.p18

Now the Vajra.

4.15

Vajra Āṅgirasa, desiring cattle, practiced austerities.
He saw this sāman; he praised with it.
He reached this iḷā.
Cattle indeed are iḷā.
Then indeed he obtained cattle.
This is a cattle-granting sāman.
He obtains cattle, he becomes rich in cattle, who knows thus.
Because Vajra Āṅgirasa saw it, therefore it is called the Vajra.
Now the Yaudhājaya has three finales, for the arrangement of the pressings.
Now the Auśana is the final sāman, so that by the final sāman we may attain the final heavenly world.
Now the Rathantara.
The Agniṣṭoma is brahman; the Rathantara is brahman.
Standing firm in brahman they go forth.
Now the Vāmadevya.
Cattle indeed are the Vāmadevya.
Possessing cattle indeed they become, having praised with this.
Now the Naudhasa.
Sharing the same world indeed are the Kāleya and the Rathantara.

4.15.p1

"Forward the somas dripping intoxication"—thus there are Gāyatrī verses containing [the word] "forward" (pra) for the Ārbhava Pavamāna on a Rathantara day. For this day is one on which they wish to advance. "Forward" is the form of the Gāyatrī. With the form of the Gāyatrī they advance. They contain [the word] "intoxication" (mada). Intoxication is indeed sap. The third pressing is as it were drained. Since these [verses] contain [the word] "intoxication", they place sap in it; they swell it with sap.
