42.242
When he had slain Vṛtra, all beings from these worlds acclaimed him: "This hero! This slayer of Vṛtra!" Thereby they placed vital power directly into him in advance. He who reaches this day becomes, as it were, a performer of vital power, one who has slain Vṛtra, as it were. That there is [the word] "this" (eṣa)—thereby they place vital power directly into him in advance. In this regard they say: "The six-day pṛṣṭha rite possesses the seasons, while the Chandomas are without seasons; those who are [engaged in] the Chandomas are established as if without seasons." In that these [hymns] have five verses and six verses, the Chandomas are thereby provided with the seasons. That six-verse hymn is the last. When it is direct, then they say "this" (eṣa); when it is indirect, then "that" (sa). Those who reach this day go, as it were, indirectly. Therefore that six-verse hymn by which they advance is the last. With it they ascend. The stoma is forty-eightfold. The Jagatī has forty-eight syllables; the Jagatī is cattle; the Chandomas are cattle. They proceed establishing themselves in cattle, in the Jagatī.
