On them [is sung] the Śrāyantīya. The gods, when undertaking the sacrificial session, said, 'Whatever is cruel in our self, let us cast it out. May we not enter upon [it] being cruel.' That which was cruel in their self, having cast it out, they placed it in the wiping of two platters. Then they entered upon the sacrificial session. Thereupon this cruel (akhala) god was born. Because he was born from the two platters (śarāva), that is his name. This [god] was born as Agni. Him this [god] does not harm who knows thus. He said to the gods, 'For what have you generated me?' 'For oversight,' they said, 'so that you may slay him who transgresses.' Prajāpati lusted after his own daughter, the Dawn. She stood before him, having become a red deer. Having become a spotted deer, he mounted her. He noticed: 'For this oversight indeed the gods generated me; this one is transgressing; come, let me shoot him!' He shot him. He, being shot, cast off this form and soared upwards.
