By means of the twelve-day rite, the gods went upward to the heavenly world. The asuras and rakṣases followed them. They made the meters behind [them]. Severing them, they took refuge in the uneven syllables. Then they could not dislodge them. Therefore, uneven stomas are more full of vital power. Of them, one should not let this triṣṭubh be defeated. Defeated, indeed, is this meter. Only in a defeated meter does he firmly establish himself at the end of the sacrifice. They consist of thirty-three syllables. Thirty-three, indeed, are all the deities. In all the deities they firmly establish themselves at the end of the sacrifice. These virājes are shaggy; virāj is food, [and this is] for the securing of the food of the virāj. They belong to Agni. The Udgātṛ thereby makes himself and the sacrificer the head and prominent. Prominent, foremost, an eater of food, and the best among his own people does he become who knows thus.

Just as one would level a thick clod of earth with a harrow, in the very same way they appease all the stotras and śastras with the Vāmadevya.

[Thus] they appease [them].

What the Vāmadevya is among the stotras, that Prajāpati is.
