58.310

The first three-day period has the gāyatra at its beginning; therefore this Agni burns upright in this world. The second three-day period has the gāyatra in the middle; therefore Vāyu blows transversely here in the intermediate space. The third three-day period has the gāyatra at the end; therefore yonder Āditya shines downwards from heaven. These are the divine arrows, laid on, unsharpened, not resting, standing in these worlds warding off all evil: Agni on earth, Vāyu in the intermediate space, Āditya in heaven. These go warding off all evil for him who knows this. By these conquests, by these distinctions, these worlds are conquered and distinguished according to their proper order. Because these, being in the same sacrificial performance, nevertheless become diverse, therefore the gods, the fathers, and human beings, being in the same world, saw one another. By these conquests and distinctions they are conquered and distinguished according to their proper order.
