58.317

Gāyatrī created the Anuṣṭubh.
It sustained the fourth day;
by means of it, the fourth day was arranged.
Triṣṭubh created the Paṅkti.
It sustained the fifth day;
by means of it, the fifth day was arranged.
Jagatī created the Aticchandas.
It sustained the sixth day;
by means of it, the sixth day was arranged.
These became six pṛṣṭhas, six meters.
They formed pairs.
Offspring and cattle form pairs for him who knows thus.
The first day is performed with Gāyatrī, the second with Triṣṭubh, the third with Jagatī,
the fourth with Anuṣṭubh, the fifth with Paṅkti, the sixth with Aticchandas.
Therefore Aticchandas verses are recited on the sixth day.
Just as one would seek a shallow place in the deepest water with the tallest [staff], so indeed the gods sought a shallow place on the sixth day with the Aticchandas meters.
And so they seek it then, both for the pervasion of the sixth day and for the continuity of the subsequent three-day period, without interruption.
