58.367
He looked around at the waters that were hissing in it.
He said: 'Now give them to me, give me these waters now, and then I will be born!'
To him [Prajāpati] gave six thousand [streams] of water.
Concerning this there is this verse:
'No other crosses them; nor can anyone explore them;
into him from all sides bear honey, milk, ghee, and curd the six thousand mothers.'
These indeed are those named 'mothers', these very quarters [of space].
They flow for him each by a thousand; they satisfy him.
He was born.
When he was born, [Prajāpati] exulted over him:
'Luster has been born, faculty has been born, vital power has been born, brahman has been born, royal power has been born, the ruler of the seven cattle has been born, the supporter of the seven armies of the quarters has been born, the born one has been born, the begetter has been born, the mother has been born!'
He even exulted over himself: 'The mother has been born!' he said.
He who knows this becomes exultant.
For him when he was born they placed this royal throne.
On it they consecrated him:
58.367.p1
the Vasus for kingship, the Rudras for paramount rule, the Ādityas for self-rule, the All-Gods for supreme rule,
58.367.p2
the Maruts for all-encompassing sovereignty, and the Sādhyas and Āptyas for highest station.
58.367.p3
As he was such, his father Prajāpati lay down on him.
58.367.p4
He said to the Vasus: 'Hand this [father] over to me!'
58.367.p5
They said: 'We cannot harm our father Prajāpati.'
58.367.p6
He spoke to the Rudras; they did not desire [to do so].
58.367.p7
He spoke to the Ādityas; they did not desire [it] at all.
58.367.p8
Then he spoke to the Maruts. [They asked:] 'What would be ours from that?'
58.367.p9
'This Midday Pressing of mine, which is [my] exclusive [share], that shall be shared by me with you.'
58.367.p10
'So be it,' [they said].
58.367.p11
Having overpowered him, they handed him over to him.
58.367.p12
As he kept saying, 'Pleasant to me! Pleasant to me!' he took this luster from him with which he shines here.
58.367.p13
Because he said 'Pleasant to me!' (candraṃ me), therefore [he is] Candramas (the Moon).
58.367.p14
Whenever he took from him again and again, just so much remained over.
58.367.p15
Therefore, even today, there is a glow belonging to this one.
58.367.p16
Just as this one shines by day, so that one shines at night.
