7.27

Upon them [is sung] the Mādhucchandasa.
Madhucchandas Vaiśvāmitra desired: "May I become foremost, preeminent, endowed with spiritual luster!"
He saw this sāman.
He praised with it.
Then indeed he became foremost, preeminent, endowed with spiritual luster.
"May we be foremost, preeminent, endowed with spiritual luster," [thinking] thus they sit for a sacrificial session.
Foremost indeed, preeminent, endowed with spiritual luster they become.
And because Madhucchandas Vaiśvāmitra saw [it], therefore it is named Mādhucchandasa.
This is the sāman of the Acchāvāka having iḷā.
Cattle are indeed iḷā.
In cattle they thus establish themselves.

7.27.p1

"That exhilarating drink of thine, which is choice..."
—thus for the Ārbhava Pavamāna[-stotra] the gāyatrī verses contain [the word] "exhilarating drink" (madvat).
Sap indeed is exhilarating drink.
Exhausted as it were is this third pressing.
Now, because these verses contain [the word] "exhilarating drink", they thus place sap in it; they swell it with this.
"With that, purify yourself as drink!"—thus they contain [the word] "drink" (andhasvat); food is indeed drink, for the attainment of food.
"Slayer of the hostile Vṛtra..."
—this is the form of the triṣṭubh.
For that which contains [the act of] slaying is the form of the triṣṭubh.
For the triṣṭubh is royal power.
"Associated, he became the ruddy one, with well-yielding cows..."
—rushing forth as it were from here is this day, because it is in bṛhatī form.
For yonder is the Bṛhat.
Now, in that it says "with well-yielding cows", it is for the approach (upasthiti) of the day itself.
