9.1.1

Agni is sacred power.

9.1.2

Therefore, when on the day of preparation he leads forward the fire,

9.1.3

they thereby strike away the evil of the sacrificer through sacred power:

9.1.4

in front by the Āhavanīya,

9.1.5

behind by the Gārhapatya,

9.1.6

to the north by the Āgnīdhra [fire],

9.1.7

and to the south by the Mārjālīya.

9.1.8

Those that are inside the sadas, [they carry them] in the middle.

9.1.9

Therefore, on the day of preparation, they lead Agni forward eastward;

9.1.10

they distribute the dhiṣṇya hearths,

9.1.11

only for the destruction of the sacrificer's evil.

9.1.12

The gods, indeed, when about to be consecrated, set Speech aside:

9.1.15

"You undergo much that is high and low."

9.1.16

The gods did not give her a share there.

9.1.17

She [came] at the Prāyaṇīya [offering]; to her they [said]: "Do not be here!"

9.1.18

She [came] at the purchase [of Soma]; to her they [said]: "Do not be here!"

9.1.19

She [came] at the guest-offering; to her they [said]: "Do not be here!"

9.1.20

Then she came to these Upasads repeatedly, having become discouraged.

9.1.21

Therefore they should perform [the rites] there in a whisper,

9.1.22

just so that they may mutually hear one another.

9.2.1

Then she came on the day of preparation when Agni was being led forward.

9.2.2

The gods gave her a share there.

9.2.3

Therefore, right from the beginning there, he should recite loudly,

9.2.4

so that they may recognise her who has arrived as not excluded from the sacrifice.

9.2.5

With "Forward the god with divine thought", he recites a triplet containing the word "forward" for [Agni] being carried forward.

9.2.6

[With] "In the place of Iḍā we [place] thee—"

9.2.7

Iḍā, indeed, is this [earth];

9.2.8

for upon her all this thrives.

9.2.9

With the half-verse containing the word "placed", "—O Jātavedas, would place", he praises him as he is being placed.

9.2.10

With the verses containing the word "seated", "O Agni, with all the gods, of fair countenance, sit down, O hotṛ, in your own place, wise; the hotṛ has sat down in the hotṛ's seat, knowing", he praises him when seated.

9.2.11

With [the verse] containing the word "messenger", "Thou art the messenger, thou our protector beyond", he concludes.

9.2.12

He recites appropriate [verses].

9.2.13

What is appropriate in the sacrifice is successful, for the success of the sacrifice.

9.2.14

Now they are eight [verses].

9.2.15

By these, indeed, the gods obtained all attainments.

9.2.16

In the very same way the sacrificer obtains all attainments by these.

9.2.17

By repeating the first three times and the last three times, they amount to twelve.

9.2.18

Twelve months, indeed, make a year,

9.2.19

for the obtaining of the year.

9.2.20

Recited continuously, they amount to eighteen Gāyatrī verses.

9.2.21

It belongs to Agni by its metres.

9.2.22

Whichever six belong to the same metre, they amount to a Gāyatrī;

9.2.23

which [has] seven, that to an Uṣṇih;

9.2.24

which [has] eight, that to an Anuṣṭubh;

9.2.25

which [has] nine, that to a Bṛhatī;

9.2.26

which [has] ten, that to a Paṅkti;

9.2.27

which [has] eleven, that to a Triṣṭubh;

9.2.28

which [has] twelve, that to a Jagatī.

9.3.1

Speech and mind, indeed, are the two Havirdhāna carts.

9.3.2

In speech and in mind, indeed, all this is placed.

9.3.3

In that they roll forward the two Havirdhāna carts,

9.3.4

it is for the attainment of all desires.

9.3.5

There are two Havirdhāna carts.

9.3.6

They put a thatch on as a third.

9.3.7

By these he obtains whatever threefold thing there is, whether relating to the deities or relating to the self.

9.3.8

With "Go forth, beneficent to the sacrifice", he recites [a verse] containing the word "forward" for the two being rolled forward.

9.3.9

[With] "Heaven and Earth for us this [sacrifice]...", "Of both of them the milk rich in ghee..."—

9.3.10

the first contains a blessing;

9.3.11

moreover, addressed to two deities, it belongs to the two Havirdhāna carts.

9.3.12

The oblation which the adhvaryu pours in the track, he follows it with the first [verse].

9.3.13

That they roll forward the two Havirdhāna carts, he follows that with the second [verse].

9.3.14

With an appropriate verse, "When like two twins striving together you two went...", he praises the two Havirdhāna carts.

9.3.15

[With] "Forward they bring you two, men seeking the gods—"

9.3.16

for many, indeed, bring them.

9.3.17

[With] "Upon the two you have placed the laudable word...", "All forms the sage assumes..."—

9.3.18

that they put on the thatch as a third, he follows that with the first [verse];

9.3.19

that they enclose the two Havirdhāna carts with mats, he follows that with the second [verse].

9.3.20

Then on the front mat [he recites] with the following [verse].

9.3.21

When he should think, "Here they will not move them,"

9.3.22

when they should place the two on their axle-pins,

9.3.23

then [he recites], "Into the lap of you two, without deceit..."

9.3.24

When there is security, then there is a lap.

9.4.1

With [the verse] containing the word "around", "Around thee, O lover of praise, songs...", he concludes.

9.4.2

He recites [verses] that are fitting.

9.4.3

What is fitting in the sacrifice is prosperous, for the prosperity of the sacrifice.

9.4.4

They indeed are eight [verses].

9.4.5

By these indeed the gods attained all attainments.

9.4.6

Just so the sacrificer attains all attainments by these alone.

9.4.7

[Reciting] thrice the first and thrice the last, they become twelve.

9.4.8

Twelve indeed are the months, the year.

9.4.9

[This is] just to attain the year.

9.4.10

As to why [he recites] thrice the first and thrice the last,

9.4.11

he ties the two borders of the sacrifice, for firmness, for non-loosening.

9.4.12

Then they address the hotṛ: "Hotṛ, act so that there may be safety."

9.4.13

Being instructed, before the recitation of the verse, he kicks away the western world with the front of his right foot,

9.4.14

"Driven away is fear from our own kin, and fear from others, O Vṛtra-slayer!

9.4.15

Away have the wheels rolled."

9.4.16

For from there is the movement of the wheels.

9.4.17

Then safety arises for that direction.

9.4.18

Going eastwards, he should lean against the northern track of the southern Havirdhāna cart.

9.4.19

This world indeed is the southern Havirdhāna cart.

9.4.20

A support indeed is this world.

9.4.21

[He thinks,] "May I go unsevered from support."

9.4.22

Standing where he might conclude,

9.4.26

he would fall away; so it would be.

9.4.27

Therefore, having concluded, turning towards his right arm, restraining his speech, returning as he came,

9.4.28

where he first stood and recited,

9.4.29

standing there and during the casting of the fire [into the cātvāla],

9.4.30

then he should approach his abode.

9.5.1

The priesthood is Agni; the nobility is Soma.

9.5.2

In that they bring forward Agni and Soma on the Upavasatha day,

9.5.3

they strike away the evil of the sacrificer by the priesthood and the nobility.

9.5.4

Regarding this they say: the hotṛ, seated, should recite this first [verse].

9.5.5

All beings indeed stir along after King Soma as he is being brought forward.

9.5.6

In that the hotṛ recites this verse seated,

9.5.7

thereby he restrains all beings each to its proper place.

9.5.8

"For thou hast impelled for the first father..."—[with this] he recites the first [verse], addressed to Savitṛ,

9.5.9

for impulsion by Savitṛ.

9.5.10

For of one impelled by Savitṛ there is no harm, for safety.

9.5.11

With "Arise, O Brahmaṇaspati!" he makes him arise; with "Let Brahmaṇaspati go forth..." he brings him forward; he recites two fitting verses addressed to Brahmaṇaspati.

9.5.12

Brahmaṇaspati is the priesthood.

9.5.13

By the priesthood he makes the priesthood prosper.

9.5.14

With "The god, the immortal hotṛ..." and "Unto thee, O Agni, day by day...", he recites two triplets addressed solely to Agni.

9.5.15

For first they carry Agni.

9.5.16

They both contain [forms of] the root *i* [to go].

9.5.17

For he praises Agni as he is being carried.

9.5.18

Where he reaches [the words], "I have placed the embryo of beings,"

9.5.19

there he should meditate on an embryo for one desiring an embryo.

9.5.20

She obtains an embryo.

9.5.21

Then they place Agni in the Āgnīdhra [hearth].

9.5.22

There the adhvaryu offers an oblation.

9.5.23

Corresponding to that, he should recite this [verse], "O Agni, enjoy, welcome that word..."

9.5.24

Of that [oblation] this is the offering verse, "Enjoy, welcome...", being fitting.

9.6.1

Then they carry Soma alone toward the east.

9.6.2

Therefore he recites [verses] addressed solely to Soma.

9.6.3

Reciting the triplet containing [forms of] the root *i*, "Soma goes, finding the path...", he follows along.

9.6.4

Then the adhvaryu offers an oblation again in the Āhavanīya fire.

9.6.5

He should recite corresponding to that: "Towards the dear, repeatedly quivering…"

9.6.6

For that very [offering], this offering verse is: "Increasing the offerings…", being fitting.

9.6.7

Then they bring King Soma in through the eastern door.

9.6.8

As he is being brought in, [he recites]: "Varuṇa, the King, him… the two Aśvins him…"

9.6.9

and: "Viṣṇu opened the enclosure together with his friends…"—[these verses] he recites for him being brought in, as fitting.

9.6.10

"You have entered within; may you be Aditi…"—[this verse] containing the word "entered" [he recites] for him who has entered.

9.6.11

"Like a falcon to its nest…", "The seat made by poetic thought…", "We invoke you, the leader of the host…", "The Asura propped up the sky, all-gods…"—with verses containing words for "seated", he praises him who is seated.

9.6.12

He concludes with [a verse] containing a blessing: "Thus praise exalted Varuṇa…"

9.6.13

He recites fitting [verses].

9.6.14

Whatever is fitting in the sacrifice is successful, for the success of the sacrifice itself.

9.6.15

He indeed recites twenty [verses].

9.6.16

They amount to the Virāj.

9.6.17

Soma belongs to the Virāj.

9.6.18

The Virāj is food; Soma is food.

9.6.19

Thereby he makes food and food-eating abundant with food.

9.6.20

With the first [repeated] thrice and the last thrice, they amount to twenty-four.

9.6.21

Twenty-four indeed are the half-months of the year;

9.6.22

[it is] for the attainment of the year.

9.6.23

Thus indeed [it is] if they bring King [Soma] in through the eastern door.

9.6.24

Or if through the western [door],

9.6.25

the hotṛ should follow along by that very [path].

9.6.26

The hotṛ is indeed the self of the sacrifice;

9.6.27

Soma is breath.

9.6.28

[He does so thinking:] "Let me not separate the self from breath."

9.6.29

Standing to the north, facing south, he concludes.

9.6.30

King Soma is indeed glory and food-eating.

9.6.31

From there he places glory close to himself; he places glory [upon himself].
