atha yaddvādaśakapālo bhavati | dvādaśa vai māsāḥ saṃvatsarasya saṃvatsarasammitaiṣeṣṭistasmāddvādaśakapālo bhavati
And why it is (a cake) on twelve potsherds,--there are twelve months in the year, and the offering is of equal measure with the year: therefore it is one of twelve potsherds.
