Having offered the universal expiation oblations with: "The waters stretched out for me…", "Out of the darkness…", "Up this…", "The bright [face of the gods]…", "Hear this my [call], O Varuṇa…", "For this I entreat you…", "You, O Agni, [turn toward] us…", "So do you, O Agni, [be nearest] to us…", "Let that be, O Mitra and Varuṇa…", "Vaṣaṭ to you, O Viṣṇu, for the sacrifices; vaṣaṭ for the unsacrificed!", "Remedy for faulty sacrifice, atonement, remove distress, for success, for complete prosperity, to the divine bodies!", "From which, O Indra, we fear…", "You to us from behind…", "Today, today, tomorrow, tomorrow…", "May Sūrya protect us from the sky…", "Bhūr, bhuvas, svar!", and "O Agni, you are the unperishing one…"; having offered a mental oblation to Prajāpati; and having offered these four great mystical utterances—having grasped with his right hand the tips of the kuśa blades that are in his left hand, and their roots with his left hand, he anoints their tips together in the dipping spoon, their middle in the clarified butter vessel, and their roots [likewise]. But if it is in boiled sacrificial messes, [he anoints] the tips in the sacrificial ladle, the middle in the dipping spoon, and the roots in the clarified butter vessel. Having thrown them into [the fire] afterward, having put the kindling wood [on the fire] with: "You are the garment of Agni", having performed the circum-sprinkling as prescribed, having thrown the enclosing sticks into [the fire] afterward, or taking fresh praṇītā water [if it is] in the regular rite, he sprinkles the directions in turn, three times each: first towards the east, then in this manner clockwise towards each direction and upward; having poured it out towards the east or towards the north, and having touched them, he touches his vital breaths and his face. [Then takes place] the dismissal of the Brahman priest.
