Now, at the time of the birth of a son, he begins the offering for the woman in labour (soṣyantīhoma). Having brought [fire] from one portion, having bathed, having smeared the sacrificial ground, having performed [the rites] from the sweeping up to the introductory formula (prapada), having made the offering of the kindling sticks (idhmāṅga); then at the time of the emergence of the head, having offered clarified butter with the two [verses], 'yātir aśvī...', at the word 'asau' ('so-and-so') he should speak the name... [...] at the word 'asau' a name connected with a lunar asterism should be given, or 'Magha'... after the naming ceremony, he should himself perform the rite separately.
I shall describe the birth-rite (jātakarma): [...] taking one pala each of honey and clarified butter, joining them both together with 'yaśaso yaśaso 'si...', grasping together with a piece of gold with the two thumbs or the two ring fingers—in the absence of that, with kuśa grass—or barley flour mixed with clarified butter... with honey and clarified butter with 'medhāṃ te...'; then the priestly fee to the brahmin.
