Now we shall explain the rule for daily worship [of the fire]. / If the time is not specified, it begins with the evening oblation; in the morning, radiant energy is attained; it is called the evening oblation because the whole has been done; because it has not been attained, they call it the morning oblation. That [time] is before three watches, according to attainment; therefore there is timely attainment. During the day it is before a watch, as stated; because of gift, therefore there is non-attainment. Having uttered the student's mantra, having taken [water] again, having consecrated it once with the syllable om, having drunk and sipped water, having plunged into finger-deep water, having performed breath-control a thousand times, having muttered “Āpo hi ṣṭhā...” a hundred times, “Śaṃ no devīḥ...” two hundred times, “Yaḥ pāvamānīḥ...” three hundred times, “Eto nv indram...” fourteen times, the Gāyatrī fifteen times, a thousand syllables of om, having muttered these eight with a concentrated mind, standing again in navel-deep water, having performed a hundred breath-controls, “Āpo hi ṣṭhā...” a hundred times.
