Now, the examination of the fertile period (ṛtukāla). Being purified after the first menses, having bathed, [performing] the recitation of auspicious blessings, having adorned the bed-chamber, having scattered flowers and fruits, having decorated each direction with lamps, making an oblong sacrificial ground with fragrant paste, having strewn upon it palāśa leaves with their tips pointing northward, and having strewn a new cloth above it with its ends pointing eastward, having made his wife lie down with her head to the east and face turned upward, stepping upon the earth with knees and feet, near her, the husband, facing towards her there, touching her organ, having muttered eight times 'May Viṣṇu prepare the womb' (viṣṇur yoniṃ kalpayatu), there will be eight sons; at the proper time the husband is to be approached; another man must not be taken; the fertile period lasts six nights.
