158 But the four stanzas which follow (iii. 53. 21-24 ) are traditionally held to be hostile to the Vasisthas b. tatasca bfkr, tanvasca hdm'. - svasarirena bfk, svasariram ca r, svam sariram ca hdm'.- achavparidade m', akvyaridade hd (= gachanparidade ), sa svayamapa ha 1, sva samapa ha b, sa samapa ha f. - The following line is added in B after 11 yab: ratham ca svasarirena ' grhanchanparidade ' | 2 1 fkm'r, 0sariram ca b. br, acham fm', acham k. 3 bmfk, paradade r. This line and that which appears in B after 116 cd seem to be corruptions of the lines which they respectively follow, and which are common to A and B. In m', 1160 d and 117 ab appear as follows (117 ab thus having three forms in this_MS.) : - sthiravityanaso 'm ganyanaduham ca va grhantrajan 96 | tanvasca svam sariram ca grhanachavparidade anaso'gani cotyapyanadvahau grhatmajau 97| tatasca svasarirena grhantsa svayamapa ha ratham ca svasarirena grhanacham caridade 98 | -°dvesinyah smrtah hm`r'rr 4 r± (?), °dvesinirviduh 1, °dvesini viduh fb, °dvesini vidhih k. * That is, the cart, its parts, and the oxen. They are pronounced to be hostile to enemies a and magical (abhicarika) incantations. tah prokta bfk, tu prokta 113141°2, yah prokta hm`r (ep. Cp. Rgvidhana i. 19. 4; i. 20. 1.
119. The Vasisthas will not listen to them. This is the unanimous opinion of their authorities (acaryaka)a: great guilt arises from repeating or listening (to them) b;
iii. 60 - ta na hm`r, tu na b, su na fk - maha ° hdm' fk, mahan br. - dosasca jayate hd, dosah bfkr. 119 ed is omitted in r1r. a That is, the authorities among the Vasisthas are unanimous on the injurious effect of these stanzas on the Vasisthas. The word acaryaka is quoted only in the sense of 'the position of a teacher'; here it must have some such sense as 'body of teachers.' is, on the part of Vasisthas. b That 120. By repeating or hearing (them) one's head is broken into a hundred fragments; the children of those (who do so) perish: therefore one should not repeat them a. - kirtitena hbrs, kirtistena m', kirttanena fk - srutena bfkrs, gunena hdm', corrected on margin to srutena in h. * This sloka is quoted by Sadgurusisya to show why the Vasisthas do not listen to these stanzas. Roth, Zur Litteratur, p. 108, cites the sloka; cp. Max Muller, Rg-veda2 vol. ii, p. 23. 121. The seer praised the All-gods with the four (hymns) To him' (imam: iii. 54-57). B 122. while he uttered 'Great is that unique mysterious power of the gods' (a devanam asuratvam tad ekam mahat) b. The Asvins, Mitra, the Rbhus are (the respective deities of) 'The milch-cow' (dhenuh: iii. 58), 'Mitra' (mitrah: iii. 59), and 'Here, here, of you' (iheha vah: iii. 60). b ab * That is, the refrain of iii. 55 slightly altered (mahad devanam asuratvam ekam). 122 is found in B and m1 only. This and the preceding line may very well be later additions as they contain no new statement. If we deduct them, as well as 123 ab (A) the two vargas, 24, 25, have only five and a half slokas. They may thus originally have formed one varga only. and 124 ab ' A 123. (The stanza) addressed to Mitra, 'To Mitra five' (mitraya panca: iii. 59. 8) a, should be recognized as addressed to the All-gods b. But the last triplet here in the hymn to the Rbhus (iii. 60.5-7) is addressed to Indra and the Rbhus.
160 tvatrarbhave in all MSS. and r. - sukta uttamah hd, sukta uttama b, sukta uttame fk, suktah sa uttamah r.-The end of the varga is marked by 24 here (after uttamah ) in h (24 in d), but in m1bfk at the end of the next line (after cHT), where the number of the sloka is also given by m1 as c (= e04). a The All-gods are mentioned in it: sa devan visvan bibharti. There is no reference to this statement in the Sarvanukramani. 123 ab is found in hdm1r only, being omitted in bkr2+5.
B 124. In the preceding couplet (iii. 60. 3, 4) Indra is incidental. After 'O Usas, with strength' (uso vajena: iii. 61) the fifth a (hymn), which is addressed to Dawn, there follow in the final (hymn iii. 62) six triplets addressed to separate deities: the first (1-3) is addressed to Indra -Varuna, and the following one (4-6) to Brhaspati ; - 124 ab is found in bfkm1r, but is omitted in hdr1rr2 (?).-ga ga br, gaya £.- purvadrce pancamat 1, pacamat m', pancagat bfk. - ausasad b, ausasyad m', ausastyad hd, usasa fk, usasyad r (Sarvanukramani on Rg-veda iii. 61 : usasyam ). - uttarastvantye sat prthagdevata- strcah Am' 12 (°tah smrtah m ), uttara saghrthagdevata cah b, uttara sadbhi yam -- gdevata -- ca fk, uttare sadbhih stuta rgdevata trcaih 1. - tatha parah hdm' r', tatah parah, taduttarah r', (barhaspatya ) uttarah bfk. a This must mean the fifth hymn of the group iii. 57-62, the seer of which is Visvamitra, while the seer of the preceding three (54-56) is Prajapati Visvamitra or Vacya. It could not mean 'the fifth hymn to Usas,' as iii. 61 is the sixth hymn in the Rg-veda addressed to that deity. 125. and (then come three respectively) addressed to Pusan (7-9), Savitr (10-12), Soma (13-15), while the last (16-18) is addressed to Mitra -Varuna. And with that (final triplet) Jamadagni a praised the two gods who delight in law (rtavrdhau) b. - maitravaruna uttamah hm'r, sannamantyastu yastrcah bfkr° 1". - °misca 4, °mistu B. - The end of the varga is here marked by 24 in bf, not in hdk. a According to the Arsanukramani, followed by the Sarvanukramani, Jamadagni is the alternative seer of this triplet. b This epithet of Mitra -Varuna occurs in Rg-veda iii. 62. 18 as rtavrdha.
iv. 15 Mandala iv. 26. Deities of Rg-veda iv. 1-15. 126. Manu x. 106; Sieg, Sagenstoffe, p. 79.-126 is quoted by the Nitimanjari on Rg-veda iv. 18. 13. 127. that seer, descendant of Gotama, praised Agni with fifteen hymns (beginning) 'Thee' (tvam: iv. 1-15), and Indra with the following sixteen, 'Hither' (a: iv. 16-32) a. r. suktaireti tu hr˚r±m±b, suktaireti ca 1'1', staptaureti ca b, taptaureti ca fk, suktairetaistu . a The series, being interrupted by iv. 27 (syenastuti, below, 136), extends to 32; cp. above, iv. 105, and below, v. 12, 105.-126 and 127 are translated by Sieg, Sagenstoffe, pp. 78, 79. 128. In the three a (stanzas) 'As such, thy brother' (sa bhrataram: iv. 1. 2-4) Agni is incidental (nipatabhaj); others say that (the seer) praises the incidental (nipatin) Agni together with Varuna b. m'. -- anye °stautyahur bfk, °stauti cahur , °stitityahur hd, ॰stauti tyahur m'. nipatinam m'br, ante nipatinam hd, agnye nipatanam 1, ase nipatane k. * This must be an old mistake for catasrsu (often confused in MSS. with ca tisrsu), as the vocative agne occurs in all the four stanzas (iv. i. 2-5), and the Sarvanukramani has upadyas catasrah. Hence the statement of the Sarvanukramani that Agni alone b or Agni and Varuna are the deities of iv. i. 2-5. 129. Some (say) that the two hymns 'Agni, upon' (praty agnih: iv. 13, 14) are addressed to the divinities mentioned by their characteristic names (lingoktadaivata) a. But with the two (stanzas) 'He noted' (bodhat: iv. 15. 7, 8) the seer praises Somaka only. II. Y
