aṣṭau sthānāni varṇānāmuraḥ kaṇṭhaḥ śirastathā
jihvāmūlaṃ ca dantāśca nāsikoṣṭhau ca tālu ca

There are eight places of articulation of speech sounds: the chest, the throat, likewise the head, / the tongue-root, the teeth, the nose, the lips, and the palate.
