aśābdo yadi vākyārthaḥ padārtho 'pi tathā bhavet
evaṃ sati ca saṃbandhaḥ śabdasyārthena hīyate //

If the sentence-meaning were not conveyed by word-sound, the word-meaning too would be likewise; / and this being so, the relation of the word-sound with the meaning is lost.
