"stoḥ" is an aggregate dvandva; the masculine gender is Vedic [usage]. [On] "ścunā": it will be stated on the rule "sahayukte ['pradhāne]" that the third case ending occurs even without connection with [the word saha]; "connection" (yoga) is obtained here by supplying an ellipsis. Here, there is numerical correspondence between the original element and the substitute. But between the cause and the recipient of the operation there is none, on the authority of the indicator "śāt" (P. 8.4.44). In "alpāctaram" (P. 2.2.34) and the like, however, there is no palatalization because it is Vedic usage; but in "tajjñānam" and the like, it certainly occurs. "stoḥ ścau ścuḥ" could easily have been said. Nor should it be said that by the presence of the metarule "tasminn iti nirdiṣṭe [pūrvasya]" (P. 1.1.66), [forms] such as "yajñaḥ" and "yācñā" would not be accomplished; for by the clue "śāt" (P. 8.4.44), that [metarule] does not apply here.
