'bhūvādayo dhātavaḥ' (P. 1.3.1). 'bhūvādayo dhātavaḥ': this is a dvandva compound of 'bhū' and 'vā'. There is a single remainder (ekaśeṣa) of the two words 'ādi', which signify 'arrangement/beginning' and 'kind'. The bahuvrīhi is: 'those of which bhū and vā are the beginnings'. Or, 'those beginning with bhū, resembling vā'. And intending that resemblance is by expressing an action, he says: 'expressive of action'. Why 'expressive of action'? Let there not be the designation of verbal root in 'yāḥ paśyasi' and so forth. For if that were present, [lengthening by] 'āto dhātoḥ' (P. 6.4.140) would apply. Why 'beginning with bhū'? Let it not apply to 'hiruk', 'pṛthak', and so forth, nor to a form ending in a tiṅ affix conveying the sense of verbal state (bhāva), such as 'śiśye'. By marking roots like 'stambh' with an indicatory 'u', it is indicated that roots occurring in the sūtras have the technical name verbal root. But the inclusion of 'culump' and so forth is by the gaṇasūtra 'bahulametannidarśanam' (this illustration is varied).
