savaiyā of thirty-one syllables. Praise of the city of Banāras: / Two rivers, the Varuṇā and Asī, enter and flow into the Gaṅgā; / between them lies situated the renowned city of Banāras. / A settlement within the land of the Kasīvāras, it is therefore named Kāśī; / it is known as the birthplace of the venerable Supārśva and Pārśva. / There both Jinas revealed the path of liberation; / from that time onward the world has known it as Śivapurī. / In this manner the names of the city of Banāras were established; / whoever speaks otherwise speaks the words of false doctrine.
