The season — Wordplay (maṭakku).
āciriyaviruttam of eight metrical feet.
This is the season when the battle-wounds inflicted by victorious Kāma swell;
this is the season when [separation] burns the body like fierce fire!
Why do both hands wear no conch bangles at all?
Why does the hero forget his place and pay no heed to an assembly of relatives?
In the domain of Aruṇai, where He of the dense, long matted locks
casts his glance of compassion entirely upon his devotees,
this is the season when the gentle south wind, having wandered through streets, wavers;
this is the season when the mind of this innocent maid, wandering through streets, wavers!
