Early spring — nēricai akavaṟpā.
Rare to be worshipped by Mālu and Ayaṉ
who join their blossom-like hands morning and evening;
he who created all worlds in the wink of an eye;
he who has no mother or father of his own;
he who performs the sacred dance so that puppets of many lives
may dance beautifully on the cords of old karma;
the hunter of true penance who severs the net of karma;
the lord of musk who binds the net of the mind;
the lord of spring's delight with unfailing generosity
who gives sixty-six thousand gold [pieces] as boons;
he of Aṇṇāmalai, with clanging anklets;
the nectar sweet to the eyes; from Mount Kailāsa,
as if it were Mount Malaya in the southern direction of the God of Death,
the blacksmith Spring, having set up the bellows and spread a gentle breeze,
stirring the tongue of the fire of tender shoots on the forge of the grove,
clamping it within the pincers of the tireless cuckoo's beak,
pouring therein the charcoal of glowing sparks of bees,
and moving the tongs of blossoming clusters that sound within,
has fashioned and offered cold blossom-arrows to the warrior of lust;
yet my husband has still not arrived,
O swan-like soft-gaited maiden with dark tresses like the laurel grove!
