regions, until the light of Islam shone forth in that darkness and the lightning-flashes of guidance gleamed in those skies. He destroyed the fire-temples, broke the idols (budd) and images, and emptied the land of those who are not righteous, except those under the dhimma pact. Through him Islam reached the farthest East, and met the rising of the sun with the radiance of the shining dawn; and he carried the banner of the community of Muḥammad, as Abū Naṣr al-ʿUtbī said, to where no banner had reached and no sura or verse had been recited. He built congregational mosques and mosques, put an end to the [heathen] chanting with the call to prayer, silenced the murmuring with the Qurʾān, set the people of this faith upon the heads of the infidels, and made them inherit—by God's aid—their wealth, their dwellings and a land they had not trodden. Moreover, with every fluttering thing a fluttering thing is extended for him: on land the eagles of the banners, and at sea the ravens of the ships, the vessels raised up like mountains; so that not a day passes without the sale of many thousands of slaves at the lowest prices, because of the abundance of captives and seizures.
