Ibn al-Tāj al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Multānī told me — I said: How can a slave-girl reach this price despite the cheapness? He told me — each one [told me this] in a separate sitting — [it is] because of her beautiful form and the grace of her manners, and because most such slave-girls know the Qurʾān by heart, write (manuscript p. 29) a script, recite poems and reports, are skilled at singing and playing the lute, and play chess and backgammon. These slave-girls vie with one another in such things: one says, 'I will take my master's heart in three days'; another says, 'I will take his heart in a day'; another says, 'I will take his heart in an hour'; and another says, 'I will take his heart in the blink of an eye.'
