The noble sayyid Tāj al-Dīn b. Abī al-Mujāhid al-Ḥasan al-Samarqandī told me that one of the great khāns in Delhi used to drink wine, was addicted to it and persisted in it; he was forbidden but would not desist. This Sultan was gravely angered with him, seized him and took his wealth, and the total of what was found belonging to him was four hundred million mithqāls and thirty-seven thousand mithqāls of red gold. This story suffices to show both his extremity in condemning wrongdoing and the vastness of the wealth of these lands, for this sum, reckoned in Egyptian qinṭārs, comes to forty-three thousand qinṭārs or seven hundred qinṭārs of gold, which is almost beyond all count and reckoning.
