When the rebellion of the qāḍī Jalāl al-Afghānī that we described earlier took place, the aforementioned Shams al-Dīn, the ship-owner Ilyās, who was one of the leading men of this city, and Malik al-Ḥukamāʾ, mentioned before, resolved to hold out against him in this city, and began digging a moat around it, since it has no wall. But he overcame them and entered it, and the three men hid in a single house. Fearing they would be discovered, they agreed to kill themselves, and each of them struck his companion with a qattāra—we have described it already. Two of them died, but Malik al-Ḥukamāʾ did not die.

Also among its great merchants was Najm al-Dīn al-Jīlānī, a handsome man of great wealth, who built a great house and a mosque there. Then the Sultan sent for him, made him amīr over it and granted him the insignia of rank. That was the cause of the loss of his life and his wealth.

When we arrived there, the amīr of Kanbāya was Muqbil al-Tilinkī, who stands high in the Sultan's favour. In his company was Shaykh Zāda al-Iṣbahānī, his deputy in all his affairs. This shaykh had enormous wealth and was knowledgeable in the affairs of government; he kept sending money to his own country and scheming to escape. News of him reached the Sultan, and it was reported that he intended to flee, so [the Sultan] wrote to Muqbil to send him by the post. He was brought before the Sultan and placed under guard, and it is the Sultan's custom that whenever someone is placed under guard, he rarely escapes! But this shaykh came to an agreement with his guard on a sum of money to give him, and the two fled together. One trustworthy person told me that he saw him in the corner of a mosque in the city of Qalhāt, and that he afterwards reached his own country, recovered his wealth and was safe from what he had feared.
