One day Malik Muqbil entertained us at his house, and it so happened, by a rare coincidence, that the qāḍī of the city, who was blind in the right eye, sat opposite a sharīf from Baghdad who closely resembled him in appearance and in his one-eyedness, except that he was blind in the left eye! The sharīf began looking at the qāḍī and laughing, and the qāḍī rebuked him. He said to him, "Do not rebuke me, for I am better than you." He said, "How so?" He said, "Because you are blind in the right eye and I am blind in the left!" The amīr and those present laughed, and the qāḍī was embarrassed and could not answer him, because the sharīfs in the land of Hind are honoured with the very highest honour.
