I was told that the reason they have left this mosque undemolished is that one of the Brahmans pulled down its roof to make a roof for his own house from it; fire broke out in his house, and he, his children and his goods were burnt! So they came to respect this mosque and did it no harm thereafter; they served it, placed water outside it for passers-by coming and going to drink, and put a net over its door so that birds should not enter it.

It is a large, fine city with orchards and markets. The Muslims have three quarters in it, each quarter with a mosque, and its congregational mosque is on the shore; it is a wonderful building with belvederes and sitting-rooms overlooking the sea. Its qāḍī and preacher is a man from ʿUmān, who has an excellent brother. In this town the ships of China pass the winter...
