and widespread disturbances arose from it. Al-Malik Hūshanj, son of al-Malik Kamāl al-Dīn Gurg, was at Dawlat Ābād, and there was a pact between him and the Sultan that he would never swear allegiance to anyone else, neither in his lifetime nor after his death. When the Sultan's death was rumoured, he fled to an infidel sultan called Barbara, who lived in inaccessible mountains between Dawlat Ābād and Kūkan Tāna. The Sultan learned of his flight and, fearing an outbreak of disorder, hastened to Dawlat Ābād, followed Hūshanj's trail and besieged him with cavalry. He sent word to the infidel to hand him over, but he refused, saying: "I will not hand over the one who has sought my protection, even if it brings me to what it brought Rāy Kanbīla." Hūshanj feared for his life and sent word to the Sultan, making a pact with him that the Sultan would withdraw to Dawlat Ābād and that Quṭlū Khān, the Sultan's teacher, would remain there, so that Hūshanj could obtain guarantees from him and come down to him under safe-conduct. The Sultan withdrew, and Hūshanj came down to Quṭlū Khān, who pledged to him that the Sultan would neither kill him nor lower his rank. He came out with his wealth, his family and his followers and presented himself to the Sultan, who was pleased at his coming, satisfied him and bestowed a robe of honour on him.
