10.11.1
When we intended to set out from the city of Abūhar, the people left it at the beginning of the day, but I stayed there until midday with a group of my companions. Then we set out, twenty-two horsemen, some of them Arabs and some non-Arabs. In that desert eighty infidel footmen and two horsemen came out against us. My companions were men of courage and worth, and we fought them fiercely. We killed one of their two horsemen and took his horse as booty, and we killed about twelve of their footmen. An arrow struck me and a second arrow struck my horse, but God granted safety from it, for their arrows have no strength. A horse belonging to one of our companions was wounded; we gave him the infidel's horse in its place and slaughtered his wounded horse, and the Turks among our companions ate it. We carried those heads to the fort of Abū Bakhar and hung them on its wall. We reached the said fort of Abū Bakhar at midnight; its name is spelled with fatḥa on the bāʾ, sukūn on the kāf, fatḥa on the hāʾ, and ending in rāʾ.
