12.32.4

A boy, one of the sons of the maliks, claimed that he had struck him without cause and brought him before the qāḍī. The judgement went against him: he was to satisfy him with money if he accepted that, and otherwise allow him retaliation. I witnessed him that day: he returned to his audience, summoned the boy, gave him a stick and said to him: 'By my head, you shall strike me as I struck you!' The boy took the stick and struck him twenty-one blows with it, so that I saw the cap fly off his head!!
